Monomakh’s Hat

Setting: We can’t exactly call this a project on Baikal, as the stationary volunteer camp will be located some distance from the shore – about an hour’s walk.  However, this is more of an advantage than a drawback.  The camp will be situated in the territory of the rustic resort “Tyoplie ozera na Snezhnoi” (Warm Lakes on Snezhnaya).  This resort is located on a ridge of the Khamar-Daban mountain range, about 7 kilometers from Lake Baikal, along the rushing mountain river “Snezhnaya,” and on the banks of three beautiful forest lakes. The three lakes – Isumrudnoe (Emerald),  Skazochnoe (Fairy-tale), and Tyoploe (Warm) – are located deep in the forest at the foot of the mountain “Shapka Monomakha” (Monomakh’s Hat). In the summer, the water in the lakes heats up to 25-28 degrees Celsius, which is why the lakes are called “The Warm Lakes.”   The combination of the snow-covered peaks of the Khamar-Daban, amazing plants, clear glacier water in the river “Snezhnaya,” and the sandy beaches of the Warm Lakes create lasting impressions.

The "Stars of Balan-Tamur"

Setting: East of Lake Baikal in the ancient, untouched Siberian nature of Dzherginskii National Nature Reserve. Although not near Lake Baikal, this project gives a chance to experience an area of pure wilderness, picturesque lakes, rapid-running rivers, and high mountain peaks in the sparsely populated northeast corner of the Buryat Republic. Work: Clean up and widen the trail where it already exists, and build up whole new stretches of the trail, often using rock walk-ways to do so. We will also create switchbacks where the terrain might be too steep, and mark the trail with special directional and other signs.

Maksimikha - 3

Setting: The GBT volunteer camp will be located on the sandy beach of the picturesque Maksimikha Bay, on the southeastern shore of Lake Baikal. Maksimikha Bay is part of Barguzin Bay, the biggest and one of the most beautiful bays of Baikal. The water in the bay is comfortable for swimming in the summer months, and inland from the beach is a pine, birch forest. The project site is about 1 km from a tourist camp, which was inactive last year, and 12 km from Maksimikha, a village with about 700 mainly Russian and Buryat residents, located on the shore of the lake.
